About us

Subalterno1 is a gallery fully dedicated to italian self-production. During the last five years became one of the most important independent design gallery in Italy and Europe. It's a place where self-produced designers and their objects are presented, displayed and distributed. Besides the contemporary collection, the space researches and offers an hystorical selection of modern design, with a special focus on midcentury furnitures and lamps. It's a real showcase interacting with those traveling through the hystorical working-class neighborhood of Lambrate (Milan).

It's a self-managed initiative, participated and shared with those involved in the project. Subalterno1's main supporter is the architect and self-producer Andrea Gianni. Stefano Maffei, architect and associate professor of Politecnico di Milano Design Department is the gallery's scientific curator. Tecnificio, maker facility in Milan, is a stable partner of Subalterno1 as a design studio, through the activities of art direction, exhibition design and graphics.

Beside young designers, Subalterno1 not only discovers new talent but continuously works with the most famous Italian designers that operate as self-producers, fabbers and makers often selecting this gallery to show their new pieces; in particular we like to point out Massimiliano Adami, Antonio Cos, Carlo Contin, Lorenzo Damiani and Paolo Ulian: internationally renowned as designers and self-producers, each one honored with solo exhibitions at "Triennale di Milano" and others museums and cultural institutions.

Subalterno1 opened to the public in 2011 during Milan Fuorisalone with the exhibition Autoproduzioni Italiane that Corriere della Sera reported as one of five unmissable events of that edition. ANALOGICO/DIGITALE exhibition, curated by Stefano Maffei and Stefano Micelli on April 2012, showed how makers, artisans and designers could work together to develop a new manufacturing model. MONDOPASTA exhibition was listed by Domus in its top ten of the best events during Fuorisalone 2014. The show was set up again for several international events, in Italy and abroad: Paris Maker Faire 2014, Rome Maker Faire 2014, Ailleurs en Folie (Mons, BE) 2015. Subalterno1 took part of Miart - International Modern & Contemporary Art Fair - in the Object section curated by Domitilla Dardi. Celebrating XXI Triennale di Milano, a retrospective was dedicated to the first 5 years of Subalterno1's activity inside New Craft exhibition curated by Stefano Micelli.
